Ted Stern

San Diego session player, performance artist, songwriter, and space enthusiast

Bio

Ted Stern is a multi-instrumentalist, whose violin and pedal steel guitar has been found in live performance and studio work with San Diego area musicians and bands for nearly 45 years. In 1999, Ted met Dawn Jackson at an audition for what would become Hatfield Rain, Dawn’s band playing songs together for more than 25 years. Ted’s Jackson Maverick HD2, hand crafted by David Jackson, drives Ted’s luxurious, spacious style and creamy tone. In addition to appearances with Hatfield Rain, Ted performs and records with Jeff Berkley and the Banned, and he is the creator of The Universe Channel, a concept that wants to promote a future life in space through song, stories and theater. The Universe Channel band is planning its fourth album, an instrumental collection called Pedal Steel in Space!

Gear

My Jackson Maverick HD2 is a unique, jet black, resin-capped instrument hand crafted and signed by David Jackson “Maverick HD Number 2 ever sold” before the Sho-Bud name was revived, as a prototype for a new line of resin capped guitars based on the original ShoBud permanent design.. Displayed for a time in the Jackson Steel showroom, it was tested and admired by many of Nashville’s best players for its unique tone and stability, until it was finally sold to Ted, and set up to his unique modification to the standard Nashville E9, using Foot Pedal 3 to take both B’s to Bb, and RR to take D# to D.
